Many Las Vegas business owners are just finding out about Search Engine Marketing (SEM), and how it can benefit their Las Vegas website and while it is a relatively new way of marketing, the principles have been around for a long time.
What is search engine marketing (SEM)?
Search Engine Optimization is the biggest buzzword right now especially when you talk of promoting yourc company’s website. But did you know that Search Engine Marketing is another important spoke in the business marketing wheel? The first thing you should know is that Search Engine Marketing, SEM is quite different from Search Engine Optimization or SEO. With this being said, you will find a lot of business people treating SEM the same as SEO.
The first thing that differs between SEO and SEM is the perception of Search Engine Marketing. Search Engine Optimization works on the key words and key phrases and content of your website’s pages and how the pages need to be designed keeping Search Engines in mind and how they will rank on a search. Search Engine Marketing on the other hand deals exclusively with how you promote your website with search engines. It could be said that a Search Engine Optimization effort could be a subset of a Search Engine Marketing campaign.
Search Engine Marketing Techniques
Basically, any technique by which the visibility of a website improves with search engines is covered under the umbrella of Search Engine Marketing. Thus, from an aggregate perspective, you could look at techniques like Blogging, Search Engine Submissions, Social Networking, Viral Marketing and other techniques. You could also look at methods like Contextual Advertising and Paid Inclusion being subsets of Search Engine Marketing.
Contextual Advertising
Not many are aware of the complete workings of contextual advertising. Here’s an example to illustrate the concept. Assume you have visited a website A, which is in the Sports niche. When you visit the website, you could see some ads popping up from the site that deals with sports accessories or memorabilia dealers. Basically, you see an ad which is relevant to the context and the content of that particular website. This is how contextual advertising works.
Now, how does the business owner benefit from these ads appearing on their website? Simple, the ad appearing on the webpage would have a revenue basis tied onto it depending on certain actions being performed by the users. For example, a webmaster could get paid if 100 users click on the ad, and so on.
Paid Inclusion and Pay-Per-Click Placement
There are some search engines on the internet that are very popular (google, aol, msn, yahoo), so popular that business owners and webmasters are inclined to invest some money to get into the directory of these resources just so that they have the opportunity to get ranked on the first page as a “sponsored listing” so they can get the traffic and recognition of coming up on the first page of a google search, let’s say. This is where Paid Inclusion or Pay-Per-Click placement comes into play.
A web master or web developer can set up a paid inclusion or pay-per-click campaign to help promote your website (or if you are so technically inclined, you could do it yourself as well). You choose the key words you’d like to rank for, set a budget and run your campaign. The main objective of this is to have some traffic through search engines.
With the above knowledge, you should be in a position to understand that Search Engine Marketing is separate from Search Engine Optimization. One of the best examples of SEM at work would be to see the working of Google AdWords, which best symbolizes Contextual Advertising.
At the end of the day, both the techniques increase the visibility and page rankings of your company’s website within the search engines.

Blog marketing has become a powerful way to get more people to know what a business offers and why they should should use the product or service that is being offered. Blogs are no long just online journals. Large and small businesses alike are using blogs as marketing tools to expand their research and generate new business.
What Is A Blog Anyway?
The word “blog” is actually a shortened form of the the phrase “web log.” When blogs first appeared with regularity back in the 1990′s, they were used almost exclusively as “online diaries” where people would simply write down their daily activities, personal opinions, thoughts, goals, and dreams. It took a few years for businesses to recognize the potential that blogs had to connect with prospects and customers. Blogs can be a part of a website or stand alone.
How Blog Marketing Can Help Businesses?
1. Be An Expert. A blog allows a business owner to communicate with individuals on a personal basis. Blogs are generally not static. Instead, they tend to be updated regularly and are less formal in nature. Blogs let business owners cover a variety of subjects and issues related to the niche the business is in. This will increase the credibility of both the business and the owner, and demonstrate the knowledge and expertise associated with that niche. Blogs also allow owners to go over additional information that just can’t be covered via other forms of advertisement methods such as commercials, display ads, telemarketing, and direct mail.
2. Increase Exposure. Most blogs generate a RSS feed that third party websites and individuals can use to instantly get updates whenever the blog has a new post published on it. “RSS” stands for “Really Simple Syndication” and is what lets a site to subscribe to a blog and receive the new posts as they occur. What this means for the business owner is a dramatic increase in exposure. Every time the blog gets new posts, the posts are immediately distributed to all of the RSS feed subscribers. So hundreds, even thousands of people outside of the blog will be reached.
3. Increase in Traffic Generation. Because blogs tend to be highly focused on a specific topic, they tend to rank well in search engines like Google and Bing. The higher the blogs rank, the more people will find them in their search for information. Getting a blog to the first page of Google can result in an explosion of highly targeted traffic. Businesses thrive on theses type of prospects.
Blog Marketing for Businesses
Although blogs have become very simple to create and maintain, most business owners still prefer to use the services of an internet marketing consultant to help them establish a professional-looking and effective blog. These internet marketing firms can also create keyword-rich content related to the niche the business is in, as well as managing the time and effort to publish those posts at specified time intervals.
Today’s business owners are quite aware of the marketing power provided by the efficient use of blogs. Besides being a way to generate new customers, it also gives owners the ability to interact with past customers and develop long-term relationships with them.

Build a professional-looking web presence to stand out from the competition
The same way Las Vegas business owners shouldn’t leave logo design, storefront décor, advertising layouts, or anything else that will represent their company in the hands of an amateur, nor should they settle when it comes to their website design. With web presence becoming more and more important to companies of all sizes, the first impression potential customers often have of any company is that which they see when they do an online search. If your website doesn’t impress, or at least cast a professional image, the impression visitors to your site will have of your company will mirror that.
Companies that strive to stand out from the competition understand that there are many ways to accomplish that, and image ranks high on that list. That’s why the benefits of employing the expertise of a professional, Las Vegas-based web design company to create a user-friendly, attractive website far outweigh the costs. These days, many companies make the mistake of settling for one of the many build-it-yourself web page templates that are so common in today’s Internet business world. Those sites may be simple and quick to launch, but without you offering fairly extensive know-how, they typically lack the creativity that will help your site create a positive, lasting first impression.
In addition to making an aesthetically pleasing website, hiring a professional web designer will ensure that your site gets maximum exposure on the Internet. Selecting the proper domain name and placing SEO-friendly copy are just two critical factors that determine how high your site ranks on search engine lists when consumers do an online search. SEO (search engine optimization) is the means of purposefully placing select copy blocks throughout your website to increase your site’s ranking on search list results from sites such as Google, Bing and Yahoo!. A professional design company will know the intricacies of SEO, and likely even employ a writer to generate the copy your site needs.
While many business owners fear farming their job out to a professional designer may leave them without creative input during the design process, those in the Las Vegas area who have found the most success hire a local design firm with whom they can work closely. While the designer provides the technical expertise, artistic direction and design suggestions, by working with a local talent you’ll have the freedom to maintain as much creative control as you desire. From choosing the right template colors, to adding features that give visitors the ability to contact you easily, download maps, browse your inventory, and even communicate with one another via a forum board, there’s no end to the ways in which you can create a website that will best benefit your company. Most important is realizing just how important a positive web presence really is. These days, the challenge isn’t just getting customers through the door. Many times, you have to get them past your web page first.

Las Vegas business owners and companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars each year on their marketing efforts. Unfortunately many smaller companies don’t even have a marketing plan or strategy in place to help guide them and judge the results of their efforts. Many times, it seems like money wasted.
Put on your Marketing Strategy cap!
There are numerous highly effective marketing strategies that can help you grow your Las Vegas business that can help you refine your marketing efforts. Just takes a bit of time, thought and research to figure out a plan. Here are some suggestions:
- Identify Your Target Market – Who buys your products and services and why? How old are they, are they male or female, conservative or liberal? How do they think and feel?
- Market to Existing Customers – Your existing customers are your most valuable resource. Be aware of what services you’ve provided to them and anticipate if they need additional products or services. They aren’t always aware of all of the products and services you offer. Help them, they already trust you.
- Niche Marketing – What customers or clients do you currently have where you deliver the best results and generate the most revenue? Many marketing experts agree this is one of the simplest and most effective ways to generate business.
- Provide Free Information – Providing potential clients with free information, facts, resources that will help them solve their business problem and save them time and money is a valuable strategy in getting your foot in the door for a prospect to become a client.
- Maintain Communications – Keeping in touch with present and potential clients is personable and keeps your name and company in their mind throughout the year. You can send postcards, mailers, email newsletters or call them on the phone to check in.
- Customer Referral Campaign – Offer an incentive (gift certificate, free services, etc.) for your existing loyal customers to keep your services in mind with the people they already do business with. They can act as sales people for you and you should do the same for your Clients as well.
